The Anniversary of Ted Cruz’s Attempts to Deny Health Care to Millions

In the face of overwhelming evidence that the Affordable Care Act is working, Ted Cruz and the rest of the GOP clown car of presidential candidates have decided to play political games and have vowed to repeal the ground-breaking legislation. In fact, a year ago today on the anniversary of the ACA, Ted Cruz launched his campaign in a promise to take away health care from hardworking Americans and their families.

Here are the facts: an estimated 20 million Americans have gained health insurance due to the ACA. For the first time, over 9 in 10 Americans now have coverage, all while we are enjoying the longest stretch of private-sector job growth on record in American history.

Before the ACA’s enactment, insurance companies could decline coverage for people for almost any reason, which left those seeking care to face the impossible choice of not getting the care they need, or risking bankruptcy. In fact, the ACA has protected as many as 129 million Americans – including 19 million children—who could previously have been denied coverage due to a pre-existing health condition.

“Republicans have no choice but to peddle fiction to try to discredit the landmark health law. Ted Cruz has gone so far as to shut down the U.S. government over the ACA, costing taxpayers $24 billion in the process. Today, on the one year anniversary of Ted Cruz’s vitriolic campaign— and the 6th anniversary of the ACA— the choice couldn’t be more clear. We need to elect a Democrat to the White House who will protect Americans’ access to affordable care.” – DNC National Press Secretary Mark Paustenbach
