As Rubio stops in Michigan today after an abysmal Super Tuesday, he will channel his inner Mitt Romney, and wants to let Detroit go bankrupt – again. The Michigan press welcomed him to the Great Lakes State him with this brutal headline today:
It’s become a conservative rallying cry to cut off federal funding for so-called sanctuary cities, but that could hit home in Detroit under a plan from presidential candidate Marco Rubio.
Sanctuary cities are broadly described as those which have policies limiting their police departments’ work with immigration enforcement agencies. In Michigan, Detroit and Ann Arbor are sometimes referred to as sanctuary cities. But exactly which cities qualify isn’t clear.
“It’s not an official designation or a club you join,” said Susan Reed, supervising attorney at the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center.
But at least one presidential candidate seems to include Detroit on the list of cities he would de-fund.
Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., has made Detroit into a symbol of what he’s trying to change, featuring a picture of the city on his web page on sanctuary cities. Below that picture is a promise to “cut off federal funding for sanctuary cities.”

This isn’t the first time Rubio has turned his back on the people of Michigan. Just last month, he said he has no idea what the Flint water crisis was because “it is not an issue his team has been focused on.”
