Two Republican presidential candidates offered up truly ugly responses to our nation’s senseless epidemic with gun violence. When asked about the shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado:
Cruz said on Hugh Hewitt that “the overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats.”
Rubio said on WKXL in New Hampshire today that “the vast majority of shootings happen when a criminal is shooting another criminal.”
“What an outrageous reaction to the murder of three Americans, including a police officer and an Iraq War veteran, and the wounding of nine others. Instead of offering up real solutions in the wake of another preventable act of gun violence, Rubio and Cruz would rather appeal to the darkest elements of the Republican Party and devalue the lives of everyday Americans lost on our country’s soil.
“Rubio and Cruz seem to think that belittling the rampant levels of gun violence in this country and undermining bipartisan criminal justice reform efforts benefits them politically – but their dangerous rhetoric does nothing to prevent the deaths of more than 10,000 Americans who are killed by gun violence every single year. With Americans dying on the streets, at schools, churches, movie theaters and health clinics, what more will it take for Republican politicians to wake up and work with Democrats to do something about the violence here at home, rather than spend time fear-mongering and politicizing at every turn?” – DNC Director of African American Media Michael Tyler
