Re: Republican Presidential candidates and the Boy Scouts of America

Republican candidates have been searching for every opportunity to distinguish themselves from the pack, highlighting extreme right-wing positions in order to capture the base’s attention.

So when the Boy Scouts of America’s executive committee announced that they had unanimously voted to end the ban on openly gay scoutmasters – a symbol of the remarkable advancement of LGBT rights in the U.S. – GOPers were eager to show how tightly they would cling to the past.

  • Scott Walker, who suggested in March that achieving the rank of Eagle Scout has prepared him to be commander in chief of the U.S. military, said that reinstating a ban on gay scoutmasters would “protect children.”
  • Rick Perry, an Eagle Scout himself who has spent the last few weeks apologizing for the Republican Party’s assault on Americans of color, did not extend that sentiment to the LGBT community, saying that the Scouts would be “better off” by banning gay scoutmasters.
  • Rick Santorum, a ringleader of the anti-LGBT movement for years, said that allowing each troop to decide on the issue of gay membership would place the organization’s “fingerprints on the murder weapon.”

Scott Walker, Rick Perry, and Rick Santorum have made their anti-LGBT views clear. Which of the GOP 2016ers will be next to earn an intolerance badge?
