ICYMI: GOP Sen. Mike Lee Tears Into Trump on Conservative Talk Show

Just days after Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell couldn’t say if Donald Trump is qualified for the presidency, and less than two weeks after Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan struggled to defend his endorsement, Senator Mike Lee of Utah tore into a conservative talk show host who pressed him on why he hasn’t endorsed the GOP’s standard bearer. Senator Lee didn’t mince words last night, pointing out that Trump accused Ted Cruz’s father of conspiring to assassinate JFK, and citing the religiously intolerant statements Donald Trump has made. Lee ripped into Trump’s dangerous and divisive campaign, telling the conservative talk show host that his state “consists of people who are members of a religious minority church…of people who were ordered exterminated by the governor of Missouri in 1838, and statements like [those Trump makes] make them nervous.”

Strong words from Senator Lee. But like McConnell and Ryan, Lee is caught up in a problem of the GOP’s own making: they’re trying to defend the indefensible. Lee followed his takedown of Trump’s divisive rhetoric and concerns about “people who were ‘ordered exterminated” with, “look these things are not something that I couldn’t get over.”

“Donald Trump’s dangerous and divisive rhetoric isn’t something anyone should just ‘get over.’ Donald’s suggestion that Hispanics can’t serve objectively as judges, his calls to violence at his rallies, and his insistence on banning an entire religion, all foment hate and are fundamentally un-American. Donald Trump doesn’t have the judgment or temperament to serve. If Republicans in Congress can’t stand up to Donald Trump, they don’t either.” – DNC Communications Director Luis Miranda

Transcript of Senator Mike Lee’s comments to conservative talk show host on why he hasn’t endorsed Donald Trump:

“We can get into the fact that he accused my best friend’s father of conspiring to kill JFK…We can go through that the fact he’s made some statements that some have identified correctly as religiously intolerant. We can get into the fact, wildly unpopular in my state, in part because my state consists of people who are members of a religious minority church. Of people who were ordered exterminated by the governor of Missouri in 1838, and statements like that make them nervous. Now look these things are not something that I couldn’t get over if I heard the right things out of him. But if you want to go to why it is I have concerns, I can go on if you like. I hope I can get over these concerns.”

“Don’t sit here and tell me Steve, that I have no reason to be concerned about Donald Trump.”
