DNC Statement on Trump’s Foolish Taiwan Call

“Donald Trump is either too incompetent to understand that his foolish phone call threatens our national security, or he’s doing it deliberately because he reportedly wants to build hotels in Taiwan to pad his own pockets. Given that Donald Trump didn’t release his tax returns and hasn’t divested from his business, it appears Trump is prioritizing his personal fortune over the security interests of the nation.”- DNC Spokesperson, Eric Walker

Financial Times: Donald Trump risks China rift with Taiwan call

Donald Trump risks opening up a major diplomatic dispute with China before he has even been inaugurated after speaking on the telephone on Friday with Tsai Ing-wen, the president of Taiwan.

Fortune: Donald Trump Probably Just Made China Really Mad

Local media outlets in Taiwan have reported on the Trump Organization’s interest in development projects in the city of Taoyuan, whose mayor confirmed to the Taiwan News last month that Trump was considering developing luxury hotels in the area.

Trump is already facing scrutiny over potential conflicts of interest that his business ties could pose to his new role. He said this week that he will leave his company “in total ” before entering the White House, but he has not yet provided details about how he will do so.

Slate: Trump’s Phone Is a National Security Threat

Making this Taiwan news all the worse, the Trump organization has reportedly been in discussions about building a series of luxury resorts and hotels there, so this could potentially be one of the many areas where he could use American foreign policy to advance his own business interests.

At this rate, Trump is on track to spark a major international crisis before he even takes office. If there’s anyone within his transition team that’s at all concerned about protecting national and international security over the next four years, it’s imperative that they do two things as soon as humanly possible: 1. Appoint a secretary of state who has a baseline knowledge of international affairs that Trump will actually listen to, and 2. Take away his phone now.
