DNC Statement on Trump nominating Ben Carson to Lead HUD
Donald Trump today named Ben Carson as his choice to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development. This is the same Ben Carson whose top advisor said he would not be able to do the job, arguing that “Dr. Carson feels he has no government experience, he’s never run a federal agency” and the “last thing he would want to do was take a position that could cripple the presidency.” Carson also does not believe in the mission of the agency he’s been tapped to lead, once calling President Johnson’s Great Society – the set of programs that lifted millions out of poverty and created HUD – a “failure.”
Even more embarrassing – Donald Trump repeatedly called Ben Carson a “pathological liar,” questioned his faith and temperament, and said Carson didn’t have any “aptitude to do any of the deals that you have to do.”
“Ben Carson is not qualified for this or any other cabinet post, all you have to do is ask him. And Donald Trump’s agenda for HUD is clear now that he’s tapped someone who doesn’t believe in the mission of the agency he’s supposed to lead. After all, Trump himself was sued by the government for housing discrimination in the 1970s for refusing to rent to African-American and Latino families.
Americans deserve a leader committed to building strong communities and providing access to quality affordable homes. Millions of Americans count on HUD and Donald Trump has had little regard for their well-being, both as a developer and now the president-elect.” – DNC Deputy Communications Director Eric Walker
